Aboard were Year 1, Mrs Lamb, Miss Doohan and Miss Lilley. They were looked after on the flight by Mrs Sully, SPSP's own 'trolley dolly'. Having checked in, they boarded their flight and were soon arriving in Dublin. They visited the Tourist Information office, Dublin Zoo, Dublin Cathedral and had a picnic on the banks of the River Liffey. A quick stop at the Duty Free Shop was made before boarding the return flight to Chesterfield. They were fortunate with the weather and returned to school at the end of the day having learnt a lot about life in the capital city of the Emerald Isle.

The new area boasts permanent seating, a walkway and a balance beam. There is no doubt that the addition of Forest School to the Reception Class Curriculum has enhanced what we offer and the children clearly benefit from the team building, problem solving and creative activities that are all part of the Forest School experience. In due course we are hoping to develop the programme further to include all pupils in Reception and Years 1 & 2.

Canoeing now during Life Skills

Yesterday saw the first canoeing sessions ever undertaken as part of our unique Life Skills programme. It has long been our intention to expand our Life Skills programme and two groups consisting of pupils in Years 4 and 6 successfully took to the waters of the Chesterfield Canal at Tapton Lock. During the year it is hoped that all groups within the programme will have an opportunity to hone their canoeing skills on the canal. The school's annual Activity Week at High Ash Farm for Years 5 & 6 includes canoeing on Rudyard Lake and the Caldon Canal, so the Life Skills sessions will help children to be more proficient in a canoe.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Thank you for helping to make a huge stir last Friday! We stirred you up enough to part with £180.88 to help with Macmillan Cancer Support. Special thanks to Bridget Mullen and all the other kitchen staff who helped to make the event possible and to Cheryl Bradshaw for organising and inspiring us to be involved.

Tesco Voucher Reward

Isabel Favell and Andrew Davies, our new Head Girl and Head Boy, along with The Headmaster attended a presentation at the Tesco Metro store in the centre of Chesterfield yesterday to celebrate the school's involvement in the ever popular Tesco Voucher Scheme. In fine weather we hope to have the workout on the school playground but in inclement weather we will take cover in the school hall. Healthy living is so important and we are mindful of the problems being caused in society by so many overweight children. As well as the Friday Workout, compulsory weekly PE, Games and Swimming lessons and our Life Skills Programme help to reinforce our Healthy Living Teaching.

Oliver! ~ What a stunning performance!

Unless I had seen this production of Oliver! by Years 5 & 6 I would never have believed such young actors could bring off such a spectacular success of what is a challenging stage musical. From the moment the curtains opened and we heard the famous song, 'Food, Glorious Food', the audience knew they were in for a dramatic treat. The teamwork of all the dance routines was breathtaking and a number of individual performances will live with me for many years to come. Without doubt, the greatest accolade should go to Thomas Chapman, who played Fagin with such aplomb it was hard to believe he was only eleven years of age; Andrew Davies' portrayal of Mr Bumble was also of the highest quality. Congratulations to all who took part, the audience will remember this production for sometime to come.

The Good Time Boys

This year's dramatic production by Years 3 & 4, 'The Good Time Boys', took place last week. The two performances were eagerly anticipated and the cast did not disappoint and produced a moving and exciting performance of an adaptation of a traditional African folk tale. Confidence and enjoyment were there for all to see and this production saw Years 3 & 4 able to maximise the effectiveness of the production by their use of the new school stage, lighting and sound equipment. The benefit of drama is clear and the children's heightened self-esteem as the production drew to a close was very evident. Who will ever forget the moving dance performed by Year 3 at the end of the production? Well done to all involved.
